Went here with friends on 3/18 following my second marathon in two days (the last six miles on Sunday were spent fantasizing about the free beer at the end, a shower, and something spicy). My friends that live in VA Beach asked (after the beer and shower) if I liked Thai - "I LOVE Thai" was my response and off to Bangkok Garden we went. I was excited by my friend's rave reviews and was even more excited when I saw that it was in a strip mall - everyone knows that there is fabulous food to be found in strip malls. We started with an order of the fried wontons (stuffed with pork and water chestnuts) which were served with a yummy dipping sauce. I thought these were delicious, crispy outside, well spiced meat inside, and not too greasy. The wontons came out around the same time as our salads - I didn't realize that we got a salad with our main dishes, but the house dressing was lovely - it tasted like ranch but an Asian ranch - if there were such a thing - it definitely had some sesame and ginger in it which really added to the loveliness - I would buy it by the case if they sold it. For my main I ordered the Pad Thai Woon Sen (choice of meat stir-fried with bean sprouts, green onion, egg, and bean thread noodles) with pork and requested that it be spicy. It was perfect. Just the right level of spice, tender pork, and bean thread noodles, I love bean thread noodles. The serving was huge and even though I had a 3+ hour drive back to Alexandria, I had them box it up. It may have been even tastier for breakfast the next day (yes I eat my leftovers for breakfast - don't judge). My travel companion ordered one of the specials - red pork fried rice. Doesn't sound like much, but it was fabulous. A little bit spicy, lots of pork, egg, bean sprouts, green onions, some rice noodles, and made with jasmine rice. I stole several bites of his dish. Our local friends ordered the Pad See-Iw (choice of meat stir-fried with rice noodles, broccoli, eggs, and a house-made sauce) with chicken and a chicken dish that was on the specials menu - chicken with a peanutty curry sauce served with broccoli, green beans, and a side of white rice. I tried both dishes and they were delicious. Oh, and they also had the Thai iced tea - served in one of the largest glasses I have ever seen, and the server refilled their iced tea (complete with the cream) whenever she refilled my water glass. I wish I lived closer to Bangkok Garden, I'm craving their food as I write this.

My wife and I were in town for the weekend and we made a beeline for Bangkok Garden based on other reviews. I am a fan of Thai food but my wife is from Thailand and a connoisseur, and she was impressed. We started with a shared Som Tam and it was enough for two. After that i had the Massaman curry based on the owners recommendation and my love of curries. It was full of flavour, well presented and enormous. Served with a little rice its easily enough for two people. My wife had the Larb salad and once again it was huge and more than enough for one person. Its easy to do Thai food badly, and I have been to more than my fair share of poor Thai restaurants. Save yourself a lot of heartache, don't waste time eating second rate food. Going to Bangkok Garden will be a treat and a window into the delights of authentic Thai eating.

Horrible! Horrible and the service was the worst! Rude, rude! And the food was nasty

I haven't had good Thai since I left Guam in 2010. I have to admit this food was delicious. I've been here twice and I would recommend going during lunch because dinner can be a little pricey. I love the equivalent of beef broccoli and the crab fried rice is tasty as well! They do give you a salad before the meal that I could go without. The dressing is made with ginger and the taste doesn't taste good to me. The waitresses are nice and the atmosphere feels authentic.

Outstanding service and enormous portions! You get what you pay for ! Love this place!

Bangkok Garden is a local Thai chain in the Hampton Roads area. It is a solid Thai experience if you don't get Thai very much - however, if you are accustomed to the herby fragrance of authentic homemade Thai, the Garden does not quite reach that point. There are a few Thai places with better dishes in Hampton Roads, but the Garden is probably the most consistent across dishes. Masman Curry with level one or two heat is a great entry point.

Came here last night as a family. My daughter was sleeping and the staff asked if we wanted to sit some where else quieter, I thought that was really sweet. There were plants everywhere, real plants ya'll. I thought that was super exciting, I have never ate anywhere while being surrounded by green! I got the vegetarian pad thai and it was delicious. I can't wait to come back!

Avoid this location and go to Hilltop Bangkok Garden. I ordered Massaman Curry with chicken and there were literally two tiny pieces of chicken (thinly sliced and about half an inch) and all potatoes in the dish. Service was so horrible and I waited over 45 minutes for one dish. Never going back to this location again.

My husband and I went back to Bangkok Garden for Valentines Day and had a great meal. Our waiter Aaron was wonderful and on top of everything. He was the best waiter we have ever had anywhere. Our meal consisted of a bowl of seafood medially soup, curry chicken, and garlic shrimp. One of the tables near us had ordered a interesting drink and we were curious what it was and Aaron answered our questions and even brought out a small sample each of Thai tea and it was delicious. I ordered a glass of it that we shared. We were very pleased with our visit and I can not wait to go back.

Good food, not the best Thai I've ever had but still very good. I liked the green curry. A bit expensive but there are large portions.

I ordered the Red Curry and it was absolutely delicious!!! it was perfect, a little bit of heat and wonderful taste. My wife and I went for lunch with our 8 Month old and the staff was awesome with him. Great Place!

Excellent Thai food. I decided recently to do takeout here and just called in the order. When I got there it was all packed up and ready to go. Easy to order, easy pay and easy out. When the food comes, it looks like its not enough, but it is. I had enough food for 3 days and I'm really happy about this. Be mindful that their spicy offerings are pretty hot. The food here is delicious.

Our family has enjoyed many a wonderful Thai dinner at this establishment over the years. Not having visited in recent months, my husband and I stopped in one Friday evening back in late winter. As we were seated, I looked around and thought to myself "Boy has this place gone downhill in appearance and cleanliness." We placed our order; then I used the restroom. At that point, my gut feeling was that we should leave NOW. I've always believed the restroom of an establishment sets the tone for your dining experience! My husband thought I was exaggerating. Our meal came, he ate, I picked after having lost my appetite. We boxed our food, placed in our fridge and went out of town the next morning. Our adult daughter came by to walk our dog, saw the food containers and reheated my dinner for her lunch. She called me hysterical. After consuming half the food, mixed in with her lunch plate was a GIANT ROACH! I have not been able to get this out of my mind for months! I am only sorry we didn't report it to whoever handles restaurant inspections but this establishment needs to be put on notice!!!

We came because I had an Entertainment book coupon... Plus they had 4 stars. Well, the service was horrible. We sat, and sat, and sat. We ordered, then sat, and sat. Received are sorry little salads and sat. We then received our soup. Sat. Sat. Sat. Sat. Sat. Finally receiving our entrees. Mine was not as described on the menu nor was it close to any other Thai I've ever had. I don't understand the 4 star rating. Maybe they have never left VA Beach and had REAL Thai. Oh, before we left. The busboy got soup ALL over my man. He then went to get the check... I had to request napkins! Not good. Total time there for two people was almost 2 hours! :(

This place is so amazing. I crave it all the time! We toss it up between this one and the Norfolk location every now and then. Same great food at both places. My husband's step-father is from Thailand and he always says how authentic this place is. I love their Kao Pad and their spring rolls are the best! Not a fan of their salad - but whatever. I could eat this food every night.

The first time I went to this restaurant I was with my best friend! This was when I fell in love with their food! The portions are a bang for your buck! You can make your food as spicy or not spicy! The wait staff is so friendly! The design of the inside of the restaurant takes you back to Bangkok. There are many different options to choose from. Their menu has chicken, beef, rice, and vegetarian options. My favorite is their shrimp and rice dish. Their really spicy dishes have made grown men drink water and tear up. The only problem I had with Bangkok Gardens was their take out portions. The portions are not as large as when your in the restaurant. My suggestion: enjoy the atmosphere!

Based on reviews from others, I tried the pad thai combo and the spring rolls (with shrimp) as a takeout. Was very disappointed ... neither dish had any taste. I don't think the pad thai even had any peanuts. The pad thai was dry ... the beef and pork were like dried sticks. The spring roll skins were too thick ... it was like eating a rubber veggie dog ... very chewy. On top of that, my order for these two dishes was about $25! Overhyped by the reviewers ...

Came here with a friend to make me feel better...definitely clear your head if you need the help! :) I LOVE spicy food and you can get some good spicy here! Here's what I had : Tom Yum Pak (soup) very filling, spicy and full of veggies! Som Tum Papaya Salad - spicy! Pad Kapau - We had the chicken ( onion, garlic, bell peppers, chili peppers) Can't wait to go back! Check out the pics I took...how could you say no to that?

Super friendly service and the food was pretty decent too. I am in LOVE LOVE LOVE with their steamed tofu rolls (and I'm not even a vegetarian)! Staff is pretty nice and food has been consistent. I'm a fan and I'll be back.

  • Meredith E.

The pad thai is amazing here, but you would be missing out if you didn't try the steamed spring rolls with the peanut sauce. I will often stop in and place an order before I head into Borders to do a bit of shopping so I have something to take home. I'm not a curry fan, but I've been told it's delicious. Ingredients are always fresh and the Thai Tea is addictive.

  • Kimmy C.

Meh. Food was just ok. I ordered the Pad Thai and it was overly fishy. Their Tom Kha soup lacked flavor that night and their shrimp tasted old. Portion sizes were good as was the service. The best part of my meal was the thai iced tea. Decor was very nice. The atmosphere is very quiet. My friends and I felt a little bad for laughing or talking in anything more than a whisper tone. Royal Thai and Tida Thai are much better.

I'm a huge fan of Thai; I often come to this location of Bangkok Gardens although I'm closer to the Norfolk one; this one is better, in my opinion. I was hungry for some Thai food having not had any for a few months or so. This has always been my go to place on the southside, but I guess Friday was not the day to come to this restaurant. First of all, the food was less than OK. My Pad Kee Mao was just plain spice - there was little taste, only a few green and red peppers, three or four florets of broccoli, and chicken. The noodles were cooked fine, but it was all noodles and spice. My friend had the Pad Thai; it was her first time to eat restaurant Thai, so she didn't know that her noodles were way over cooked. I could see it from across the table as she added some Thai hot sauce and tried to mix it in - just a mass of brown noodles. Again, it seemed to lack something. Our biggest problem was the service. We were put in the adjacent room - out of sight, out of mind, I guess. It took forever to get the food - at least 25 mins. Our waitress said, "Sorry. It's so busy tonight." I've been there when it was busier and I never waited that long. Later, we sat at the table trying to flag down our waitress for the check - that was 15 mins. Then we waited again for the change - another 10 mins. All and all, the food was less than perfect and the wait for every little thing was ridiculous. I'll be back, but it'll be a while.

We've been to this restaurant several times over the years and the food was always pretty good. We got take-out tonight and it seems that the prices have increased while the food has declined. The veggies in my steamed spring rolls were slightly black in places, which made me think some were slightly past their consume by date and others possibly not washed well. My Pad Thai was bad and went in the trash. My husband said his shrimp spring rolls were ok. I am pretty disappointed and hope they were just having a bad night.

I took a star off after being back to Bangkok Garden a couple of times. Here's a few updates as to why.... The food IS good but pricey. The need to get larger tables! Their 4 top tables (not booths) are so small considering how many plated items come with a typical Thai meal. This may sound nit-pickey but when you have 2 children under the age of 5 with you it becomes even more important! Speaking of children, being that they have 2 almost completely separated dining spaces(VA BCH location), why not seat those of us with small children in the larger less intimate back area? The main dining area is nice but does not feel "kid-friendly" at all.

  • Ari C.

I was disappointed with their Pad Thai, too sweet and noodles were overcooked. Just not a big fan of Thai food but my bestfriend took me there for a treat and she loves the place. Their sweet rice with mangoes, freid rolls (Tom Yung Gong, not sure) and their sour soup with shrimp in it are all delicious! I love the interior decor, everything about it. The service was awesome but like the other reviewer said, the place is so quiet we were talking very softly which was kinda funny, LOL. All in all, it's good. Might go back for the soup though!

My wife and I only discovered Bangkok Garden earlier this year (it's been here since 1988, I'm told) --- our loss. This is as fresh and authentic as it gets in Tidewater, from the steamed spring rolls (wonderful tastes of fresh basil and a little fennel), to the fish soup (flavored with galanga and lemon grass), to the wonderful selection of curries (all sorts of red, green, masman and panang curry treatments), to the unmatched pad thai (best with chicken or shrimp), to the not to be missed sticky rice with mango (only available when they are able to get Asian mangos --- Mexican/Calif mangos "...aren't sweet enough," according to the restaurant!). We're still working our way through the menu --- trouble is, every time we're in for dinner the restaurant has a couple of Specials that sound (and are) too good to resist. Last Friday is was red chili curried mango and chicken --- unbelievable combination of heat, creamy, and sweet. And no, the sticky rice wasn't available ... If you're a Thai food fan, you'll love Bangkok Garden.

I love my waitress here. She's a short older female... Her name sounds like Shampoo and she said she doesn't mind us calling her that. The Tom Yum seafood soup is absolutely amazing. Large chunks of fish, scallops, and squid. I love that stuff. The food is great. I tend to order the combination fried rice. My husband and friend loves going to this way. The only thing is the Thai Tea. I think $4.25 or $4.75 is pretty pricey for a Thai Tea (and for one refill only).

Had beef and shrimp Pad Thai 4 stars. They are serious about those stars! My mouth was burning! It was great! There papaya salad not so crisp or tart. The Thai tea was yummy! Overall great experience. Service quick and atmosphere nice. Noodles cooked just right

I love thai food and frequent this location usually once a week. The last several visits I'm afraid have been the WORST experiences I've had here. The prices have indeed increased about 12% which I wouldn't mind if the food was good. The food lately has been mediocre at best and the service Awful. We waited 45 mins for a take out and when we asked the lady owner how much longer it would be she seemed to get upset. When she brought out food out she only gave us one bag even though we paid separately and simply dropped our food at the counter never acknowledging us and walked away. When we returned to the office and began eating we became even more disappointed as the pad thai was pretty dry and tasteless. A waste of $10. I believe that this location has gone down hill significantly. Avoid this location and go to the Bangkok in Hilltop. The Pad Thai there is amazing and service exceptional.

Went here a few days ago, hoping it would be better than our experience at Tida Thai. We got the red and green curry, and it was very, very good. We also got the vegetarian spring rolls with tofu. They were not good....very bland, and for some weird reason, the rice wrapper stunk - maybe that's what it is supposed to smell like, but I've never had springs rolls that stunk. Also, why do these places charge for extra bowls of rice? They charge you $14 for a decent sized plate of curry, then give you one little bowl of rice. And charge you $1.50 for any extra bowls (Oh, and they don't tell you that unless you ask - Tida Thai does the same thing). If your food is dirt cheap, and the only way you make money is by charging for rice, then okay. I get it. But don't charge high prices and then charge another high price for a bowl of rice that costs 10 cents to make. Overall review: Curry - some of the best I've ever had. Spring rolls - gross. Service - just okay. So I think that warrants 3 stars?

My first time here, just passing through. I didn't order anything crazy, just beef pad see ew. First, they give you a small complimentary salad with an egg roll. Totally unexpected. Then, when they offered some hot sauce, they brought out a tray with four different types of hot sauces. Again, unexpected. The pad see ew was delicious, nothing extraordinary from other Thai restaurants I've had in the past. I didn't try their Thai Iced Tea because it was $4.95, but they do offer one refill. So, maybe I should've given it a shot. All in all, very satisfied and would definitely come here again.

My wife and I just moved here, and are perusing the local fare. We're avid fans of the Thai cuisine we've experienced in the Bay Area (California). After several locals, as well as many Yelpers, recommended this place, we tried it last night, but were disappointed by spicier-than-advertised food at every turn. We started with their special pork dumplings, which were cute in dim-sum style steamed rice wraps. The complementary sweet sauce made for a tasty appetizer. On to the Kai Tom Kha, two bowls, a little more expensive than we're used to, the family size listed was four times the price of a bowl. The portion was generous, the chicken, onions, and other ingredients were quite tasty, although the soup was spiced up much more than we thought reasonable. We had asked our server to ensure our dishes were not spicy. We ordered Masman curry with chicken, as well as Pad Thai noodles with chicken. Both came out wildly spicy, much hotter than either of us could tolerate or are accustomed to when eating these same dishes elsewhere. More to the point, hotter than advertised on the menu, hotter than requested. When we pointed this out, they did offer to remake it, but did not offer to remove it from the bill. Though this was a nice gesture, it was too late to recover our trust, since our palates had been so consistently offended by the previous dishes. The decor was nice, the Thai iced tea was good, but we won't be going back.

Great lunch specials! During our one week stay in Virginia Beach, we ate here three times (that speaks to our bad experiences w/ other restaurants in the area). Delicious papaya salad, nice rolls, and decent curries and overall really large portions. Not sure we will come back to VB but if we do, we will definitely eat here.

  • Leona B.

My problem when I go to Bangkok Garden is that I am so madly in love with their pad thai that it pains me to order anything else. That's usually not my M.O. I always like to try new things when I go to a restaurant more than once. But it really is the best pad thai I've ever had. Perfectly salty sweet seasoned noodles, shrimp with eggs, green onion, crispy beans sprouts, chopped peanuts and a lime wedge. It's just so...hell yeah. I credit their pad thai with turning my kid on to Thai food. Whenever she's allowed a treat of picking where to eat for dinner, she picks Bangkok Garden. We also love the crispy spring rolls and the Thai ice tea. This one's a small regional chain but the one on VB Boulevard is the only one I've tried. The interior of it is really cool too. The are carved dark wood walls and a plethora of Thai inspired decor.

This service was utter crap today. Go to Tida Thai instead. Great food there, and you can get it within an hour. Got there, tables weren't full, took 20 minutes to get salads, at 40 minutes in we had to ask if food was coming out, were told it was still cooking. Pad thai and fried rice. REALLY? Needless to say, we walked out. My drink also went empty for like 10 minutes, even with the servers not being busy. Server didn't offer any compensation for waiting, and kept calling me "sir". The one in Norfolk is excellent, but give this location a pass.

  • Ariel S.

Great Thai food here!!! Me and my wife love this joint, but the only problem that we have is that when we order our curry shrimp dish....well we basically look for the shrimp cuz they dont give you enough. Other than the shrimp, everything else is great!

    (4)
  • H.R. N.

I want to give this place a proper 4 stars so bad! I do, I really do! But it's not a true 4 star joint. It just so happens to be one of the best Thai restaurants in the VA Beach area, worthy of many repeat visits from me. And in that context, with that kind of competition, it's one of the kings. Anywhere else, though, it's a solid 3. And that's where it lands for this Yelper.

  • Justin R.

I don't konw why but this location so far tastes better. Love the pad thai (spicy), the little ginger salad is okay. I am not a ginger fan but decent. It is just the best pad thai in the area I have had period!

  • Tatyana M.

I don't know why but we were not in luck with Thai restaurants in Norfolk so far. We visited Rama Thai and this restaurant both times for lunch and can't say we liked them though we are big fans of Thai cuisine. We LOVE the other Bangkok Garden in Virginia Beach that is under the same ownership so we thought it would be the same experience here. But this place failed in all aspects: the taste of food, quality of the service and even in ambiance. The Pad Thai here was the worst we ever had. We really don't understand where all these good reviews come from.

One of the best restaurants --Thai or otherwise-- I have ever eaten at. Pad kapau chicken every time. Spring rolls are awesome. vegetables are fresh. We go here 2-3 times a month. Thalia location is best.

The worst service ever! My family went to dinner at the vb blvd location. There were ten of us, but we went early and the restaurant was fairly empty. We ordered and received salads shortly after. Then the problems began! One of our party received her meal first...thirty minutes later, three more got their meals. Our waitress then asked what two of our party ordered. Four more people eventually got their meal, followed by the last two. Then, one of us found undercooked chicken in her entree and sent it back. We also had trouble getting our drinks refilled. Total time for dinner: 2 hours. We got the check and found automatic gratuity applied to the check, normally not a problem, but this was ridiculous. We went up to the counter to pay and disputed the gratuity charge, explained our situation to the man. He said, "it (the automatic gratuity) is on the menu" and turned to swipe our credit card. We stopped him and he got a manager, who also happened to be our server, which was awkward. Gratuity and the meal with undercooked chicken were taken off the bill. I work in the restaurant industry and would be fired for this kind of performance. I always tip well and have never considered leaving no tip, but if there was ever a time, this was it. We still tipped 10 percent, when we did receive our food, it was good, but I will never return.

All of the Bangkok Garden restaurants in the area are awesome. The food is reliably delicious no matter which location you choose. Dining at this location is very enjoyable. The restaurant is quiet, clean and very pleasant. Sometimes I like to get take out at this location and bring the food over to Mount Trashmore for a picnic. For basics (especially if you haven't had Thai before), I recommend the Pad Thai and Fantasy Fried Rice (the cashews take this fried rice to a whole new realm). Also any of the coconut curry dishes would be great, and you can ask them to make it spicy. Watch out though, when they say spicy, they mean clear your sinus, drink some milk and find your chapstick spicy!

Well, we went back and spent a bunch of money that we weren't expecting to. The servers aren't the best here. I was given green tea instead of green jasmin tea, but that's okay. This happens. My biggest problem was when our main dishes arrived, our server said she was coming back to bring more rice. We waited and tried to flag anyone we saw coming our way-- but nobody saw us. When we finally asked another server to bring us plates, our curry and noodles were cold :( It was so sad and disappointing. Nothing is worse than curry that goes luke warm. I wanted to say something, but I didn't. Gees, I really should have because our bill was so pricey, that it would have made me feel better paying for it if our food was not cold. Our spring rolls were also left in the deep fryer for too long. One of servers sneezed a little in our food when she was turning her back to get another table's order. I still give them 3 stars because their curry is ok. Their pad-thai is good, but the tofu-broccoli noodles stick together and are bland. The tofu on them has no flavor either :(

This will probably be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Everything was great - from the service to the portions to the food. Here's what we ordered: - spring rolls (fried): these were pretty good but they kind of reminded me of eggrolls...the portion is HUGE though. Image 6 eggrolls on one plate... -as recommended by another yelper below we ordered tofu + garlic: this dish was pretty good...I liked the texture of the tofu...I think the garlic was overcooked though. The portion was great. - beef pad thai: SO good. The portion was insane. Like another yelper mentioned this dish can feed 4 people. - red curry beef with green beans stir fry: this dish was really good. We got 2 star spicy and it was DEF spicy. This made me happy. - thai ice tea: super good, really big glass, and free refills :) As others mentioned my understanding is that chicken is always overcooked here. The beef, however, was perfectly cooked. I wouldn't say it melts in your mouth but still much better than at other thai restaurants. Overall everything was super good and now we have at least 2 meals worth of leftovers in the fridge. At one point the one male server came over to our table and goes "3 dishes? Really?" And laughs. Seeing as how there were only 2 of us at the table and the servings being so huge we probably looked ridiculous. We didn't realize the servings were THAT big. Our waitress was great...so friendly and nice. The food came out in a good time. The total bill came out (with tax and tip I believe) to $60 and it was enough for 3 meals for 2 people. The atmosphere is kind of quiet and a bit relaxing. I recommend this place and will def come back.

  • Lei G.

You must try the Garlic Tofu which is not on the menu, but they will make it for you. The meals are large portions that are always made fresh. Unlike other Thai restaurants, this one serves their Thai Ice tea in a large glass with refills---and it is FANTASTIC! When in season, also try the mango dessert. The wait staff is straight forward, no fancy babbling. Be nice and tip, they have to share those tips at the end of the night.

Food here is excellent. Be warned though, you can make the food spicy on a scale of 1 to 5. I love spicy food and the 2 was almost unbearably hot. I can't imagine going higher than a 2. Staff was very friendly and the prices were reasonable. Good size portions. Will definitely go back.

My colleagues and I have been down in VA Beach for the past few days for work. Most of us are pretty health-conscious so we were overall disappointed to find nothing but burger and pizza joints around this area. Fortunately, Bangkok Garden had great food. The people were super friendly and very helpful for our ordering. We were down in the VA beach area for 4 days and came here for lunch three of those days. The only reason I can't give it a 5-star is because they took the brown rice off the menu. Apparently people stopped ordering it! In the DC area if you don't offer brown rice you lose customers, so please bring back brown rice! Overall this place was fantastic. Highly recommend.

Oh, Bangkok Garden, how I love you. If this were a love letter, it would be full of every nauseatingly adoring adjective I can think of. If you're looking for a nice night out, pleasant atmosphere, and spicy food to warm your tummy, this is it. Every item on the menu that I or my company has ordered is always obviously attended to with care. You can tell when someone is enjoying cooking your food, there is just a whole other sensory aspect. I cannot go to Bangkok Garden without ordering the steamed tofu spring rolls that come with a peanut sauce I would love to bathe in, but I've been told it's socially unacceptable. The coconut soup consists of a light herb coconut broth that cannot be beat. The green curry somehow makes an appearance despite my full stomach, and is even more delicious when I bring home leftovers. This may be a personal issue, but there's something indescribable about rice that has soaked in curry all night and thrown into the microwave. Bangkok Garden is the gift that keeps on giving. I'm starting to salivate just thinking about it.

In northern VA you can throw a stone and hit a Thai restaurant. But growing up in Virginia Beach there had never been any such luck. So I was really surprised to stumble across Bangkok Garden last year. The atmosphere of this location was great. Dark, eclectic, and cozy it seemed completely out of place in the strip mall it was in. The food compares easily to most Thai restaurants in the DC Area and completely surpasses many of them. Authentic curries, penang, catfish dishes, and larb all made the dinner spectacular. The waiter was great, attentive, and happily answered any questions about the menu, giving us perfect recommendations. We have a short list of restaurants in the Va Beach area that we will definitely go out of our way to visit again and Bangkok Garden is at the top of that list.

Completely agree on the spiciness of this place! My fiance ordered a 4 of 5 on his curry and I ordered a 1 of 5. They came out almost exactly the same. So, be careful when you order! The chicken satay has a wonderful peanut sauce and is quite tasty! Pad thai is always a classic and doesn't disappoint! Portions are large, staff is friendly! Tom Yum soup is a good starter too, if you can find room in your tummy for anything else!

Food so bad, serving so slow. We order rad naa and padthai were so terrible!

Best Pad Thai in the area, and I've tried them all. I drive right past the hilltop BG to get to this one. The food is fresh and tasty every single time I go. Second fav is Pad Se Ew, although it's a little on the sweet side, still a tasty dish. Larger portions at lunch than dinner. Weird, but fine with me.

WOW!!!! This was the best. Heather rocks!! The Massaman Curry Shrimp was by far one of the best dishes I have tasted in a while.

Disappointment! After reading the reviews here, I was anticipating a tasty meal, yet I was let down. The food was overly spicy. I enjoy a good spicy meal now and then, but this was rediculous. We even let our waitress know we preferred mild heat, yet the food was overly greasy and incredibly spicy. All the members of our party were in agreement that the food was WAY too spicy - nobody could eat more than a bite or two of their entrees. Portions were sizeable, which helped to justify the price, but the size only made us more disappointed that we couldn't choke the plates of fire down. We mentioned it to our server, who noticed we had only tasted our food and left the rest. Nothing was done and we were stuck with a large bill for inedible food. Disappointing! Not sure I'll ever give this place a second chance.

First off, let me say that this place is the shiznit! I ordered the Coconut Shrimp soup and it was outstanding. I also washed it down with 2 bottles of hot Sake. Needless to say, I walked out a very happy man. And when Im happy, so is my girl....teehee :P

This place has by far the best Thai food that i have experienced in the area. I have eaten at this location numerous times as well as the Norfolk location on 21st street. Service is good. The food is awesome. I've not had much here that I did not like. Prices are fair and this place is a good value. You can order most dishes with varying levels of spiciness, and i'd recommend that you error on the side of caution. i'll be back here often...and for information on specific dishes, see my review of the location on 21st street in Norfolk.

So I was in chilly Virginia Beach. I wanted something yummy, and spicy to warm me up a bit! I hit the jackpot when I found Bangkok Garden. I arrived at the strip mall that Bangkok Garden was located. I walked in and was immediately greeted and seated. The decor of the place almost reminded me of a museum. All of the artwork and displays of Thai artifacts were great to look at. To start the meal, I had a bowl of the shrimp coconut soup. The soup was served piping hot. It was tangy, and full of fresh veggies. The tail-on shrimp made the soup cumbersome to eat. Considering you have to handle HOT shrimp..just a little inconvenient. I loved how the soup was a perfect balance of tanginess and cream. For my entrees I ordered the panang curry with chicken and the combination pad thai.. Wow! Talk about FLAVOR. The curry was so delicious. I will say this. HOT=HOT at this restaurant. Buyer beware. I was sniffling and exhaling heavily while enjoying this delicious dish. The Pad Thai was a combo of beef, chicken and shrimp. The dish was delicious as well. The noodles had a smokiness to them with a hint of sweetness as well. Once I return to Virginia Beach, I plan on enjoying Bangkok Garden again! It just burned so good!

This place is awesome! I always choose this place to go to when I have some extra $ and want to be food-satisfied! Their curry and Pad Thai is delicious. You will not be disappointed by anything on their menu. I used to order the Bean Thread Salad and that was awesome as well. Right now I am hooked on their Pumpkin Curry with Tofu. Yum! We always order the Thai Iced T and the Combination Spring Rolls. You will have a lot of leftovers to take home...unless you are really hungry!

I love Bangkok Garden too. The food is always delectable. My favorite beverage is the Thai tea, and my favorite dish is the masman. Masman is a curry dish that I get spicy. Watch out for the spicy dishes, they are firecracker spicy. I haven't been in a while so I can't really speak on the service now. The waitstaff was wonderful to us and look forward to dining again there.

Just got take out from here which reminded me just how wonderful this place is. The food is really delicious every time. Sometimes they are a little slow, but that's OK - the food makes up for it. I highly recommend the fried wonton app., pad thai, masman curry, and green curry. The portions are big so you can have some for lunch the next day!

Love Thai food, so probably doesn't take much for me to love Thai restaurants. Have only gone for lunch twice at this location on VA beach blvd., have gone to other location on First Colonial only once for lunch and also once for take-out. Love the food, curries, noodles, and appetizers. At the VA Beach Blvd. location, they did seem a little understaffed, with regards to waitstaff, and cashiers...only had one or two of them working over a VERY busy lunch, both times we visited this location. For better service over busy lunches, they should really invest in more help!

Bangkok Garden can't be rated highly enough. I have to recommend the Massaman Curry which is my favorite Thai dish, they do it superbly. The dinner prices are much more expensive than the lunch prices for a similar portion, so if you are on a budget try to make it for lunch, specials run about 10$ with a salad and spring roll (enough for leftovers). The food at all locations is consistently great, if you are sensitive to spice be sure to order a one star. I like my food real spicy, but there have been times I have ordered a two star and it has been intense. Enjoy!

This was my 3rd time eating here, once for take out and once for dine in. I really love the decor, the wood paneling, the Thai statues, all the cute accents on the walls. It's very pretty while also feeling cozy and welcoming. We had a very sweet server and while he was assigned to a very large party, other servers checked in on us. Everyone was really nice and he was very apologetic that his other table kept him. Since we were looked in on, it wasn't a big deal. They were quite busy tonight. Our food took a while so we were thankful for the salads. The dressing has too much celery in it for me but my Grandma liked it. We ordered basic: shrimp and tofu pad Thai and Mas man curry with chicken, both Thai hot. Our food was not spiced at all which was kinda disappointing. We added spice to our food with their chili that they bring over. 4 different kinds! I really liked the one that was flakey, it added a nice kick. The 2 dishes were plenty for us to split between 3 people and be so full! The tofu was cooked perfectly, it was crispy on the outside but still soft inside, I don't like when it is dried out. I also ordered a Thai Iced Tea that was delish and came with a free refill. I enjoyed my dining experience with good company, good food, and friendly service. Glad this place is close by :)

I am sad this was not a good dinner out, and quite a chunk of change spent to not be happy, The food (and we had soup, appetizer, and two main dishes) were overall not well flavored. Not enough heat, definitely NOT enough ginger, and we felt that everything we had needed something it did not get, whether that was lime, salt, or heat. Our server was very sweet but his grasp of the language was poor and so when we asked for lime it was a REAL challenge for him, and he brought us lemon instead. Which, as it turned out, did help the flavor of the chicken, but still. We won't be returning when there are other Thai options in HRVA. We had Steamed rolls with chicken (sauce was good, rolls were bland), Pad Ped with chicken (needed lime and salt), Pad thai Woon Sen with beef (best dish hands down, a lot like a sichuan rice stick dish, but with no heat), and Tom Yum Pak (could not taste the lemongrass or ginger).

We're new to Thai food and we love this place! My favorite items are the Kao Pad and the coconut soups. The atmosphere is very nice, quiet and peaceful. We also like their sweet mango rice, cheesecake and Thai teas! Servers are also very nice and patient. I love that they always offer to pack your drink refill to go. When we visit, we usually get 1 appetizer (or two soups), 2 dinners and 2 desserts. This usually runs us about $50. You can see their menu online and, they're currently working on their online ordering feature! Definitely worth visiting especially if you can't get seated at the surrounding restaurants.

In my 30 years of living in Hampton Roads I still feel like this is the best Thai food place around (particularly this location). I've read some poor reviews on here about the service and food issues and they are probably rightly justified, but my experiences there have always been fantastic. I'm thinking it has to do with the fact that my group comes here pretty frequently so we've gotten to know the waitresses. We always have our toddlers with us and they are always so good with them and have watched them grow up since they were little babies. I'm not well versed in Thai cuisine and always order the same Pad See Iw but it's been consistently good for me. My friends who do like to explore the menu always enjoy their food and have had no issues. I will say that if we do get a waitress that isn't our normal one, the service isn't as great so I can see where the other reviews might be coming from. We also always get free Thai tea refills and to-go cups, but again, it might be because we know our waitress so well. Go here knowing that it might be hit or miss. For me and my group it's always a hit, but for others, it's not so great. I definitely think it's worth a try because other Thai restaurants I've tried just haven't haven't hit the mark like Bangkok Garden has.

My new favorite dish is the crab fried rice! This particular location isn't the best, I think Ghent location is the best one but when I'm in this area, this will do. Crab fried rice with real crab meat is DELICIOUS! Add spices from the spice tray and you are good to go. Also, the Pad Thai was equally good. They use thinner noodles from other pad Thai dishes I've had. But flavor was still good

In my opinion this is the best Thai restaurant in the Hampton Roads Area. After visiting multiple times, I am very pleased with the service across the board. They are very accommodating and make great suggestions. The food comes out in a reasonable amount of time, and is delicious. Unlike other Thai restaurants in the area, the portions are very large. Which always makes great left overs! Lately I've been hooked on their Thai Iced Coffee!!

  • Lily N.

The food was ok but the portion size was huge, and I liked their Thai tea. I wish they'd play some music in the restaurant since everyone was whispering to each other because it was so quiet. But I think their food was dirty because both my bf and I got upset stomachs later on that night.

I have been a loyal customer of this establishment for 5 years or more to the point the waitresses know what I eat. I was so dissapointed when I was there to celebrate a job promotion last night on 12-1-14 and a fried bug was found in my plate when I was halfway done with my food. I wasn't even given an apology and the manager didn't even come speak with me.

I wish I could give this place half a star... Awful service last time I was there. Watched people (another large party) that walked in after us (we were a party of 7), sit down and order before us. Then, the order was so inaccurate. Took forever and a day or correct it. No refills. Crappy service. After that, waitress had the nerve to add 18% gratuity. I swore never again. My sister just ordered a tray of Pad Thai for a party. THERE WAS A CAP FROM A MARKER IN THE FREAKIN' TRAY, buried deep in the noodles. This place disgusts me. Shame on them. ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, NEVER EVER AGAIN.

Bangkok garden definitely has the best atmosphere of all the Thai restaurants locally. Deep wood panneling, nice ambiance, plenty of seating. Service was pleasant and quick! I started with the spring rolls, I really liked that I could order them by the piece! So I didn't need to get the full plate of six. For my entre I had the Curry Duck which was tasty but I wanted a crispy skin and a little less fat, both of which were missing. Like every eater, I have my favorites when it comes to different types of food and Bangkok garden couldn't quite beat out my preference. That being said, it's not a bad option at all if you're in the area.

The thai fried rice, pad see ew and pad thai are all excellent. Huge portions, all the food was served fresh and hot. Service can be a bit slow from time-to-time. If we're in a bit of a hurry, we'll order take-out. Good, solid Thai food.

I'm saddened to write this review. My favorite restaurant in the entire world "failed" me this evening. My go to pad prik meal just didn't have the jolt my tongue has been accustomed to after all these years. Something seemed to be missing...the sauce seemed a little light in color. Perhaps the soy sauce? The saving grace of today's meal were the fresh spring rolls. Those are hard to mess up. BG, please don't fail me anymore. I've been bragging about you to the entire world and the last two visits have just blah...

Placed an order for pick up. The staff were a little rude. The food was not as good as normal. While I was waiting I looked around and noticed the extreme dirtiness of the place. I have lost my faith in this place. Clean your restaurant.

Came here for a quick lunch. Ordered 2 fried wontons, they were crispy and flavorful. I was hoping to see dumplings on the menu but couldn't find them, maybe I overlooked them. With your lunch comes a small salad with a tasty ginger dressing and 1 spring roll. I had the pad thai with shrimp. It was okay, I've had better. Service was quick, so I'll probably come back because it's not too far from where I work.

Mmmmmm, I love this place. I've been here several times and never had a bad experience. I usually get the Pad Thai here because that's almost always what I want when I am in the mood for Thai food but I have had a few other items here and have no complaints.

If you are craving for some authentic Thai cuisine, then this is the place for you. I was craving for some GOOD pad Thai when I came here. Being from Washington DC, I had plenty of restaurants to choose from when I lived up there. Now living here in VA Beach, my choices are limited. Well, Bangkok Garden hit the spot! I actually thought it was better than my spot up in DC. The prices here are a bit high, but you get nice size portion (enough for lunch the next day) and the quality is the best!. My boyfriend ordered takeout from here before and when we ate inside the restaurant, he said they give you more when you dine-in. We ordered Spring rolls, Salmon dish, Chicken and shrimp pad Thai, red curry chicken, and some tea. Our bill total was $60 plus tip. Service was great too. His name was Alex I believe. When we first walked in we were greeted by the hostess and directed to our table. The table was in the front corner by the window and to me it felt like the "kids table". So I immediately asked the hostess if we could sit on the other side of the restaurant, towards the back. The booths are HUGE on the other side of the restaurant. Since it was just me and my Valentine, we had way more than enough elbow room. It was very romantic, since there was hardly anyone dining on this side of the restaurant. The decorations were eye catching and the plants that they had displayed, were very well kept. Overall the atmosphere is very calming and quite. Feels like an escape to Thailand right in the heart of Virginia Beach. 4 stars!

One of my favorite restaurants! I order take out and/or dine in at least once a month! I can't recommend just one dish because I've tried so many and they've all been good. Very good customer service and it's always clean!

Love me some Thai food! Food was fresh and hot. Can't say it's the best but definitely met my standards. This restaurant received only 4 stars bc it is overly priced in my opinion. About $3-$4 above average. Thai tea portion was huge and amazing! Beautiful interior decoration

Best Thai food ever and I like it Thai hot that extra spiciness makes it even better. They are very friendly and there menu has alit of options. I order to go, but looking at the tables when I was waking out looks like you get a little more if you sit in.

This could be a very very short review: If you love Thai food and live in Hampton Roads, you need to go to Bangkok Garden. This trip, I decided to go with the Pad Ped Talay with some additional Thai fire to the mix, the perfect choice for the day. The seafood was done just perfectly, not too mushy, not too crunchy. And the sauce was spot on, it had a nice gentle attack that lingered a bit and grew in warmth. When I finished, there was still some sauce on the plate, so on the plate goes the rest of the white rice to soak up the sauce! If it wasn't considered very bad manners, I would have seriously just lowered my face onto the plate and licked up the remaining sauce. Really, it was that good. Other orders at my table looked good as well, and the fact that nobody offered to share anything means that, A). I need new friends, and B). Everyone was very happy with the entree of choice. Great service, great atmosphere, out of this world Thai food...all on a consistent basis! Exactly what more could you ask for? Go, your palate will thank you.

One of the best Thai places I've eaten at! Was in town for a business trip and decided to check it out... I had the chicken Pad Kapau and Tom Yum Goong soup. Both were delicious! The soup was very flavourful and so full of stuff there was barely room for broth =). My coworker had the Masman Curry and loved it as well. The food was not as spicy as I thought it would be (3 out of 4 spicy) but you probably shouldn't base anything on me because I have a very high tolerance for spicy food. It was a decent sized place, nice ambiance, and our waitress was very nice and helpful. Would definitely go to again if I were in the area!

I frequent this place and lately the quality if their food has gone down hill. They have started using some different mushrooms in the soup (that taste like they are canned) and different lettuce in the steamed spring rolls..I got a bunch if white iceberg in mine last night. I loved this place and always recommended it to friends and didn't mind paying a little more for great food but since my last few experiences have been lack luster I do not see myself going for a while. If they are trying to cut cost by using cheaper ingredients I think they are going to find themselves with fewer customers.

The food was ok, but not anything worth going back for.

One of my favorite restaurants! You can't come here and not get a Thai iced Tea!!! My go to is the Masman Curry and Pad Thai. Pretty place, awesome food. Nothing I've had comes close for Thai food.

The portions are huge for the average of $8 a plate. Food was yummy. Sad part is we got food poisoning. We ordered the fried rice with chicken and the kids chicken tenderloins. So they must be serving tainted chicken. BEWARE!

I enjoyed the atmosphere. The service was excellent and I had ordered the spring rolls and combo pad Thai noodle dish. Both were good. I would like to return here again when I'm craving Thai food.

Best Thai food in town! But they're so busy! My husband snd i came here on a Saturday night and they told us 45 mins before they would set us a table. We were too hungry so we had to go somewhere else. Reservation reccommened.

It's so tired and old. Decor is out of date. Menu is indiscernible. If you are new to Thai you shouldn't go here you will be lost in the menu that probably dates back to the Reagan era.

I came here for lunch for the first time yesterday and really have no desire to return. The inside and outside are not very "garden" like at all. My friend brought her computer because we were going to do some work on it. When we asked our waitress for the wi-fi password she said she didn't know it. Arg! The food was ok, but not anything worth going back for.

  • Pae C.

  • Katherine C.

    (3)
  • Kimmy C.

    (2)
  • Susan V.

Great Thai food here!!! Me and my wife love this joint, but the only problem that we have is that when we order our curry shrimp dish....well we basically look for the shrimp cuz they dont give you enough. Other than the shrimp, everything else is great!

Did not like it one bit. Badd experience for me. The chicken curry was spicy!!. Why didn't the waiter tell us it was that spicy? I specifically asked about the meal.

I don't konw why but this location so far tastes better. Love the pad thai (spicy), the little ginger salad is okay. I am not a ginger fan but decent. It is just the best pad thai in the area I have had period!

  • Michael B.

Enjoy!
